The question I get asked most about speaking is, “How do I get started? How do I get the word out about my speaking?”

This really IS the hard part, right? You’ve felt the call. You’ve prepared by studying the craft of speaking and maybe even developing a message, and now you’re waiting either for your very first speaking event or for the ball to really start rolling.

Usually, at this point speakers fall into one of two camps. There’s the I’ll-Wait-and-God-Will-Do-It camp and the I’m-Going-to-Blast-Down-the-Doors camp. I’m sure you know exactly what I’m talking about and where you fall or lean!

The best, most balanced perspective on this that I’ve heard is from Lysa TerKeurst. In an interview, I heard her say, “I feel called to do all that I can do and to pray that God will do what only He can do.”

So pray, friends! Ask God to open doors that only He can open.

But do all that you can do too. I want to share one small project that I did when I first started speaking that allowed God to work through my friends and family. Here are the steps for you:

  • Make a spreadsheet of people with whom you have a relationship. I included family, friends, and more-than-just-acquaintances from churches and Bible studies that I had attended. I ended up with a list of names and addresses all over the country.
  • Write a humble cover letter telling about the journey you’ve been on to grow into the calling you’ve been given to speak.
  • Include a copy of your biosheet.
  • In the letter, ask your people to prayerfully consider passing on your biosheet with a recommendation.

When I started this way, I received several offers to speak, and they were especially sweet because I knew they represented the support of people I loved.

What steps have you taken to launch your speaking? Leave a comment, and let’s learn from each other!

  1. This is where I am stuck! I am going to try this “one project” and see what happens. I’m certainly a “wait-and-see-what-God-will-do” girl. Turning up the prayer and making myself a spreadsheet! Thank you for the idea!

  2. Amy, I am so grateful for this page and for your wisdom! God nudged me in November of last year and I felt Him tell me to get some messages written and tucked away because the season of me getting out of my comfort zone and speaking is around the corner. Since then I have had a few people reach out to me and ask if I would be interested in speaking at their church or event. I told them yes I would be, and they told me they would would be in prayer. Now it is April and I have not heard anything more from anyone. I have wondered if I should touch base with them or hang tight and wait for God. This post is a help to me! Thanks so much.

    1. This makes me happy, happy, happy! Your online ministry is so powerful, and I love that God is expanding your reach through speaking. Sure would love to be in one of your audiences!
