Protection for Our Heart and Lives

Did you happen to see this news story yesterday?

(Please excuse the commercial at the beginning. Subscribers, you’ll need to click on the title to visit the site and watch.)

I’m telling you, God DOES have a sense of humor! On one hand I loved seeing this story this morning. On the other hand, I had a realization that made me really sad.

Our culture loves the story of a Bible protecting a man’s physical heart, but it hates the Truth that the Bible is meant to protect their spiritual heart.

In Revelation 2:12-17, the church at Pergamum had the same problem. They weren’t willing to stand on the Truth of scripture to address the pollution of wrong beliefs and heresy. Jesus introduces Himself to them as “him who has the sharp, double-edged sword” which was the solution to their problem. He was calling the church to recognize Truth in scripture and to use it in battle against wrong beliefs that led to immorality.

Every day I see news that makes my blood run cold. It’s certainly true that our culture is far down the road of calling evil good and good evil, and there’s only one way for followers of Jesus to straighten that crooked path in our own lives. It’s by standing unashamedly on the Truth of God’s Word and by allowing it to correct and protect our hearts. It’s by allowing scripture to sharply divide between our flesh and spirit…to judge our thoughts and attitudes (Heb. 4:12)…and to be a sword in the battle against evil (Ephes. 6:17).

So let’s do figuratively what that brave bus driver did literally. Let’s put God’s Word over our hearts and face all the bullets the world has to give.

These thoughts are from my study of the churches in Revelation. If you’d like to join in, here’s  a study tool I’m using that I hope will be of use to you. 🙂

  1. Amen! Everything is going down, but the word of God. Your statements “Our culture loves the story of a bible protecting a man’s heart, but it hates the truth that the Bible is meant to protect their spiritual heart.” We have to continue to boldly declare and decree the things of God!
