How Can I Know for Sure I’m Obeying God?

I have no sense of direction. None. Nada. Zip. Zilch.

You may think I’m exaggerating, but I assure you I’m not. I’ve been working at the same volunteer job for almost 2 years, but I still can’t remember which end of the hall holds the linen closet and which end holds the donations room. I never know which way to turn. I’ve spent most of my life disoriented until someone points me in the right direction.

Knowing this about myself, why would I resist a GPS? And yet I did. For years and for every occasion, my husband asked if I’d like a GPS as a gift. Birthday after birthday rolled by. Christmases came and went. I continued to refuse a GPS. “They’re too expensive,” I’d protest.

And so I stayed lost most of the time.

UNTIL my husband bought me one anyway. Now I can’t believe I ever lived without one. How could I have been so stubbornwhen the solution to my confusion and disorientation was available all along?

In a devotion I wrote for Proverbs 31 Ministries’ Encouragement for Today, I talk about living in a dwelling God has made especially for each of us. It’s a place of safety and smack in the center of His love and grace. How do we get there? Through obedience. Click here to read the devotion.

I think there are many people who genuinely want to obey God, but they just don’t know how. I’ve often felt that way. I was in the habit of saying to my college roommate, “I wish God would write me a note telling me what to do, tie it to a rock and throw it through the window.” Finally, she got tired of hearing it, and said, “Oh, please! You’d just go outside to see who in the world threw that rock!!”

She was right. Why would I follow what was written on a note tied around a rock when I wasn’t searching the guidebook I’d already been given?

God is so good to us in every way. In His kindness, He gives us exactly what we need to have confidence that we are living in obedience to Him. When we spend daily time reading God’s Word the Bible and applying it specifically and personally in our lives, we don’t have to wander around GPS-less in this world, and we can live in the benefits of living in His ways–peaceful, joyful, forgiven and free.

Years ago, Anne Graham Lotz introduced me to this simple but profound Bible study tool. I’d love to pass it all to my friends who want to know for sure they’re obeying God. Just click on the link below to print a copy. (I also highly recommend watching the link on the document. It’s about 20 minutes of Anne teaching how to use the tool, and it’s fantastic.)

Bible Study–3 step method

He’s not a God who hides. He speaks to us about our lives, giving us counsel and guidance. He wants us to hear Him, so He’s given us a guidebook, a kind of GPS for life. Let’s pick it up, get direction and move forward with joy!

    Hi Amy,
As you can see, my name is Cindy. I have found you devotional on the new Biblegateway. I am absolutely sure that your message, which lines up with God’s Word, was exactly what I needed to hear. And, I am so glad I came to your blog to further read on the subject of “How Can I Know for Sure I Am Obeying God?”

It was an encouragement to me to know that someone else has trouble with direction, any direction. I do get very confused most of the time. I usually say that I couldn’t find my way out of a paper bag. LOL However, as I read your devotional and blog I had an “aha” moment about looking at Gods love and commands as His walls of protection for me. I imagined being covered on all sides with His sovereign love.

I liked your analogy of the GPS, too. I could not do without mine, either. I used to get panicked if I lost my way but with my GPS I just press the home button and it guides me right back. Thinking of reading God’s Word, His Instruction Book, leading me back into safety, knowing I am the one who moved not God, puts a whole new perspective on keeping His commands.

Thank you, Amy, for the being obedient to the Lord to use your insight to help others grow in Christ. Will keep you in my prayers as you continue your ministry of spreading God’s Word.

Sincerely and with Love through Christ,

    Cindy <3
