How to Embrace the Joy & Discomfort of a New Season

About 5 years ago, in a season where I was beginning to experience discontent, a wise friend asked me a thought-provoking question. “If you could do anything you want, what would you do?”

I didn’t hesitate. Instead, this answer sprang from the depths of my heart, “I would get out from behind my desk!”

Now, friends, that’s a bit of a problem for a women who has been a writer and author for over 15 years. A writer’s place is most often in a silent room. Alone. Behind a desk with fingers flying over a keyboard.

Writing requires solitude and quiet.

The rub for me has been that I’m a people person who gets cabin fever in half a day. Yet, God gave me passion for each blog post. Every social media post. Three whole books. His grace on this thrilling ride has been fully sufficient, but now our good Father is giving me my wish.

He’s moving me from behind my desk into new adventures.

This post is to announce that I’m embracing a new season that includes an indefinite writing hiatus. It’s uncomfortable for me since “writer” has been so much of my identity, but it’s joy-filled too! The sadness for me comes in thinking about potentially losing touch with you, so I wanted to let you know some ways I’d still love to connect with you.

Speaking

I started this communicator journey as a speaker, and it’s still my greatest joy. I LOVE being in the room (see… people person!). I also still have messages burning on my heart to share. It would be a great honor to speak at your church or for your event, and I’d be simply giddy to meet you in person.

If you’re interested in having me as a speaker or would like to recommend me to a leader you know, you can find my speaker info here. Also, feel free to email me at [email protected] with the contact information of an event planner you know. I’d be happy to do the leg-work and make contact with them.

Social Media

Although the Lord has taken me through a deep detox, I’ll be doing some micro-blogging on social media starting with a post today that’s been burning on my heart. I’ll post and share on Instagram and Facebook in the future, putting all our tender heart and strong voice principals into practice. Please follow me there if that’s a space you enjoy too.

Books

Writing three books has been both a great struggle and a deep joy– such a weird and disconcerting combination! In the end of all the angst, though, these books are full of biblical lessons that I’m proud to share. If you’ve missed one of them, you can purchase a copy here.

How am I embracing this uncomfortable new season that holds so much uncertainty? I’m just taking the leap.

It’s the desire of my heart and the intent of my soul to proclaim the greatness of Jesus until the day I die.

Will I do it in print again? Maybe. But for now I hope you’ll join me… out from behind my desk!

Thank you Amy for your honest post! I’ve enjoyed your books, podcasts, blogs and social media content. At a certain age myself, I’m not sure what the next step should be and neither is my husband. We have a home we love, adult children nearby who are thriving, a life that works for us. I try not to focus too long on the “should be doing” voices and just do what I need to do today. Post away when the spirit moves you!

    1. Amy Carroll says:

Thank you, sweet Mary! Your support has been a source of great encouragement to me. I’m praying for you as you do what you need to do each day!

  15. Hurray you! May God bless immensely as He gives you the desires of your ❤️ in using your gifts in a new platform.
